Konev, 2025, Double channel video installation, 30’

Konev is a two-channel installation examining the story of a Soviet sailor, Miroslav Medved, who unsuccessfully sought political asylum in New Orleans in 1985, having jumped off the Soviet freighte Marshal Konev. The juxtaposition of the Soviet cinema extracts and American news television programs, including random materials such as a report on the Monaco monarchy (an actual part of the television broadcast), helps reveal the unconscious of the images. Konev brings to light the folds of filmic material, debunking narrative models of military propaganda that pose as humanist. The installation hightlights the principles of so-called soviet poetic cinema, focusing on the visual and sound semantics rather than on the plot, notably through the extensive use of landscape, light, poetry, and soundscapes. The male body is the medium of this language - appearing like a mirage - rather than a mere object of representation.
